Never not working: Little Simz aus London weilt zwar erst knapp 25 Jahre auf dieser Erde, hat mit »GREY Area« aber gerade ihr drittes Soloalbum als Independent-Künstlerin angekündigt. Nach ihrem fulminanten Debüt »A Curious Tale Of Trials + Persons« und ihrem Follow-up »Stillness In Wonderland« manifestierte die Flow-Virtuosin ihren Status als visionäre UK-Rap-Hoffnung mit meta-politischem Tiefgang. Mit der neuen Platte scheint Lil Simbi nach ausverkauften Shows, einer Tour mit den Gorillaz und Co-Signs von Jay-Z und Kendrick (»the illest doing it right now«, wir erinnern uns) endlich an dem Punkt angekommen, an dem sie sich von Druck und Erwartung freimachen konnte: »I had to learn to be okay with failing, and just be okay with things not going the way I wanted them to go. This way, I went in, vocals sounding mad rough, things out of place, things out of time, and I just trusted that it would all come together. Nothing was premade. I didn’t want to build a concept, I just wanted it to be streams of thoughts. Just me«, erklärt Little Simz ihren Mindstate während der Albumproduktion. Die dritte Single »Selfish« klingt genau danach, Simz berappt funkigen Neo-Soul mit einer butterweichen Hook von der Sängerin Cleo Sol. »GREY Area« erscheint am 1. März.
